R.E

At the Swallowtail Federation we ensure that all our schools have a clear Christian distinctiveness which mirror our values and ethos.  Our Christian beliefs are at the heart of everything we do.

The R.E curriculum follows the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus and in accordance with this the curriculum is predominantly Christian, it also incorporates the newly implemented Understanding Christianity.  Our children are encouraged to enquire and explore their own beliefs and values as well as developing an understanding and acceptance of the beliefs of others.  In EYFS, our children follow the same big questions as Keystage 1 but do so through continuous provision and stories.

We have strong links with our local churches which we attend each half term for collective worship.  Members of the clergy regularly take part in collective worship within our schools too.

Each of our schools have a dedicated prayer space, which is linked with our half termly values, in a central area as well as prayer areas in each classroom.

All church schools are subject to a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).  The main objective of this inspection is to consider the effectiveness of the school in the following four core areas:

  • How well does the school, through its distinctive Christian character, meet the needs of all learners?
  • What is the impact of collective worship on the school community?
  • How effective is Religious Education?
  • How effective are the leadership and management of the school as a church school?

These inspections happen every 5 years.  In February 2015 Hickling received the grading ‘good’, in October 2015 Sutton received the grading ‘outstanding’ and in January 2017 Catfield received the grading ‘good’.

Collective Worship

Worship is central to the life and purposes of our school and reflects the school’s Christian foundation. It focuses our thoughts on God and helps us to reflect on our own actions and attitudes.

Our collective worship focuses on a different Christian value each half-term. We also look at other world faiths and special days. Children have the opportunity to reflect on each theme through the use of our pupil voice reflection notebooks which are kept in the hall with the collective worship board.  Each half term we also send home a themed sheet of ideas for families to share.

Worship is led by members of staff within the school, members of the local clergy and other visitors.
